Exchange of Views with the Secretary General of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence

The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) hosted a roundtable discussion on May 28 with Dr Arnold H. Kammel, Secretary General of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence. From JIIA, Professor Akio Takahara, Senior Adjunct Fellow and Japan’s leading authority on China, Deputy Chief Executive Director Maki Kobayashi, and Senior Fellow Asako Takashima participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, participants exchanged views on a wide range of issues concerning the security environment in the Indo-Pacific, including developments surrounding Taiwan and broader regional dynamics. They also engaged active discussions on the future direction of cooperation between Japan and Europe, as well as between Japan and Austria, at a time when the security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific is becoming increasingly interconnected.

In addition, participants explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including security and defence, making the meeting a valuable occasion to deepen mutual understanding.
