Message from the Executive Director

I am Takio Yamada, and it is my honor to assume the position of Executive Director of the newly established Center for Global Outreach (CGO) at The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA).

At present, the international community is confronted with profound challenges. Serious conflicts unfolding across multiple regions, the policy directions of the new US administration, the rise of the Global South, and the acceleration of technological innovation are all injecting both fresh dynamism and considerable complexity into global affairs.

Against this backdrop of fundamental transformation in the international and regional order, JIIA has recognized the imperative for Japan to engage more actively and constructively in addressing global issues. Drawing upon Japan’s accumulated experience and soft power, JIIA established the CGO on October 1, 2025, with the conviction that Japan can and must play a greater role in fostering solutions.

The CGO is dedicated to advancing thought leadership, dialogue, and policy recommendations on pressing global and regional challenges. It will also undertake the proactive dispatch of distinguished Japanese experts overseas, while placing strong emphasis on cultivating the next generation of leaders who will shape the future.

In addition, the CGO will harness digital platforms, including social media and online conference broadcasting, to encourage open dialogue and inclusive participation. Through these efforts, we aspire to foster greater international cooperation and to welcome the widest possible engagement from partners around the world.

10.10.2025　A press conference and the inaugural seminar were held.

On October 1, 2025, The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) held a well-attended press conference to mark the establishment of the Center for Global Outreach (CGO) with the participation of numerous members of the press and a lively Q&A session. Following the press conference, JIIA President Kenichiro Sasae delivered opening remarks, while CGO Executive Director Takio Yamada briefed attendees on the purpose behind the CGO’s establishment. A seminar featuring three JIIA CGO Fellows was also conducted, during which enthusiastic discussions with participants took place.You can view footage from the event at the below.
