On January 30, 2024, the Japan Institute of International Affairs hosted a symposium titled "Combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing through the Use of Science and Technology." The event was joined by experts from both Japan and abroad, private companies, government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps stationed in Tokyo, who engaged in lively discussions.

The so-called illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing has wide-ranging impacts on the economy, resources, the environment, and maritime security. To counteract IUU fishing, the importance of a multifaceted approach was emphasized. This approach includes ensuring the rule of law at sea, deterring unlawful activities through legal agreements, capacity building, advanced technological tools, and international cooperation.

Furthermore, it was shown that enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) capabilities which are also important in combating IUU fishing requires international cooperation and the use of advanced technologies, including space technologies for maritime surveillance. A collaborative and multi-layered approach among nations and institutions is essential. The complexity of IUU fishing issues was highlighted, stressing the need for an integrated approach to promote sustainable fisheries management and ensure maritime safety.
