The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) and the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) co-hosted the 16th Japan-Singapore Symposium (JSS) in Singapore on 13-14 March, 2023.

At the closed-roundtable on 13 March, the participants from both sides actively exchanged views on (1) New Developments in the security landscape of the region and the world; (2) 50 Years of Friendship between ASEAN and Japan: Retrospect and Prospect; and (3) Japan-Singapore Cooperation in trade, regional economic integration, technology, and the new economy.

At the public seminar entitled "Can they navigate the challenges of a dangerous world?" on 14 March, the JSS co-chairs, Prof. Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore and Amb. Kenichiro Sasae, President of JIIA, gave welcome remarks, and keynote speeches were delivered by Ms. SIM Ann, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore and Mr. Shunsuke TAKEI, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. Tommy Koh. Following presentations by Prof. Simon Tay, Chairman of SIIA, Mr. Hiroyuki AKITA, Commentator, Nikkei Inc., Mr. Manu Bhaskaran, Founding Director and CEO of Centennial Asia Advisors and Prof. Yukiko FUKAGAWA, Professor, Waseda University, there was a lively discussion, including Q&As with the audience, on the increasingly severe regional security challenges and the role of Japan and Singapore in maintaining and strengthening the rules-based international order and promoting cooperation.
