The Japan Institute of International Affairs hosted a public webinar, "The 2022 U.S. Midterm Elections from a Conservative Perspective," on November 1, 2022.
The webinar discussed how the recent severe partisan political fragmentation in the U.S. politics has affected American democracy, and what the implications of the polarization of U.S. politics are for the foreign policy of the superpower, as well as the impact of the polarization of U.S. politics on the U.S. foreign policy of the superpower, Dr. Kenneth R. Weinstein, former President and CEO of the Hudson Institute, one of America's leading conservative think tanks, delivered a speech and engaged in discussion with Amb. Kenichiro Sasae, President of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). Prof. Ryo Sahashi, Associate Professor of the University of Tokyo, who specializes in international politics, particularly in the analysis of U.S.-China relations and international relations in East Asia, moderated the entire discussion, and all three speakers focused on the issues of the 2022 midterm elections, such as inflation control, abortion, immigration, and rising crime rates from multiple angles. They also discussed the implications of the 2022 midterm elections for the U.S. foreign policy, including how conservatives view the U.S.-China confrontation and stability in the Taiwan Strait. With the midterm elections just a week away, there was a high level of interest in this webinar, and a lively discussion ensued with many questions from the audience.
