The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) held the 15th Japan-Singapore Symposium (JSS) in collaboration with the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) on 25-26 January, 2022.

At the roundtable on 25 January, the participants from both sides exchanged views on (1) Political and Security Development in the Indo-Pacific: Implications for Japan and ASEAN; (2)Review of Japan-Singapore Bilateral Relations in the Regional Context; and (3) Regional Economic Relations including Trade Agreements.

At the open webinar entitled "Japan-Singapore Partnership in Regional Cooperation" on 26 January, the JSS co-chairs, Kenichiro Sasae, President of JIIA and Prof. Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore, gave welcome remarks, and keynote speeches (video messages) were given by H.E. Mr. Yoshimasa Hayashi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and H.E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore. The panel discussion was moderated by Ambassador Sasae, and Mr. Kono Taro, Member of the House of Representatives of Japan/ Chairperson of Japan-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship League participated as a commentator. Following presentations by Dr. Tsutomu Kikuchi, Senior Adjunct Fellow of JIIA / Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University, Prof. Simon Tay, Chairman of SIIA, Dr. Saori Katada, Professor at University of Southern California, and Mr. Manu Bhaskaran, Founding Director and CEO of Centennial Asia Advisors / Council Member of SIIA, active discussions took place on the roles of Japan and Singapore and the promotion of bilateral cooperation toward regional stability, peace, and economic prosperity, including responses to questions from audiences.
