A World in Turmoil: How Can We Rebuild International Security and Cooperation?
Russia’s February 2022 aggression in Ukraine was a historic event marking the end of the "post-Cold War" era and, with February 2024 signifying the start of the war’s third year, its outcome continues to garner attention as the most destabilizing political and economic factor internationally. The intensification of US-China competition and the Hamas-Israel conflict have also helped create an “era of turmoil” worldwide. Such circumstances confront countries with issues of defense and national security, energy and food stability, and economic security, compelling them to seek out ways of responding to these challenges.
At the 5th Tokyo Global Dialogue (TGD5), we will look back over 2023, a year in which frequent conflicts made chaos a constant, and discuss how the international community can find ways to rebuild international security and cooperation and what role is expected of Japan in these efforts.
